It was July 18 and I was just about English Comp on their ten minute break. I happen to notice that I had a missed phone call from the nursing school which I applied to and could read the voicemail from the advisor saying to call her back. I knew that this meant the time had finally come. Would I be fulfilling the next dream in my life and going to nursing school?
It was time for break, it was time for me to call, and it was time for me to find out my destiny. First things first–she asks, “How are you?” I tell her that it all depends on what she’s about to tell me. After a slight giggle, she then says, “Well, you might as well go ahead and pack your bags. It looks like you’re going to be joining us in September.” After only a brief pause and a flutter in my heart, I thank God and am in amazement for the rest of the phone conversation. “Wow” and “I’m speechless and don’t know what to say” are the only words that come out of my mouth for the next several seconds. I eventually thank her for everything, including her support and encouragement throughout the process, before telling her that she’s not allowed to go anywhere for the next two years because I’m going to need to see her on a regular basis to get through it! She laughs and without hesitation, gladly agrees.
Break time is over. I go back to the class, I let them correct their quizzes, and later tell them that it’s in honor of getting into nursing school. They are all just as excited for me and ask if I’ve told my parents yet. “No, I haven’t,” is the best way for me to answer this question. They continue and ask me to get them on the phone so they can share in the moment and yell the news over the phone. I didn’t want to take away from the joy of the moment and say they’re in heaven and probably knew before any of us. I just said that I wasn’t able to reach them. On a side note, I know the truth that I’m always able to reach them.
I later think back to a couple of students talking about the happiest day in their life. One states that it’s when she got married and another stated that it’s when her child was born. I get to say that it’s the day I found out that I’m going to be a nurse.
