Chances Lost

I’m only made to crawl for now,

I spend my life knowing that one day I’m meant to fly,

But the odds are against me.

Will I ever get my chance to fly?

Even in a tree up high, ready to go into my cocoon to prepare for flight,

The tree is taken from me and used for game.

I never had the chance to fly.

When a little boy finds joy in my pain and steps on me for sport,

I never had the chance to fly.

Even if I’m now ready for flight and have sprouted my immaculate beauty,

My innocent wings are touched,

A part of me withers.

I never had the chance to fly.

When I’m held in human hands with the best intentions, I sometimes fall.

I never had the chance to fly.

At least in this space above the clouds,

I’m surrounded by gentle hands.

Now, I have my chance to fly.
